How Multibagg AI is betting retail investors don't need Bloomberg terminals

Multibagg AI

You've got 10,000 users asking questions about Indian stocks. Do you build another screener, or do you build an AI that reads every concall, filing, and annual report so your users don't have to?

Multibagg AI chose the latter.

Here's how a solo IIT Kanpur founder went from Goldman Sachs to Shark Tank to raising pre-seed in under two years.

This Week's Breakdown: Multibagg AI

What they do: AI-native equity research platform for Indian retail investors.

The numbers: 10,000+ beta users. 50,000+ queries processed. ₹1.5 Cr (~$180K) pre-seed from AJVC. Featured on Shark Tank India Season 5.

How They Built It

LayerChoiceWhy
FrontendNext.jsSSR for SEO on stock pages, React ecosystem for complex dashboards
AI CoreRAG + LLM (likely GPT/Claude)"Iris" chatbot needs retrieval over 5,000+ company filings. RAG is the only architecture that scales
Data PipelinePythonProcessing NSE/BSE filings, concalls, annual reports daily
InfraCloud (AWS/GCP)Early-stage, needs to scale fast without ops overhead
AuthClerk or NextAuthStandard for Next.js apps
PaymentsRazorpayIndian fintech default for INR payments
DatabaseSupabase or FirebaseReal-time sync for portfolio updates
Broker IntegrationSmallcase GatewayPortfolio sync with Zerodha, Groww, Angel One via OAuth

Stack inferred from job postings and product architecture. Multibagg hasn't published technical details.

The Real Story

When Aaditya Aanand quit Goldman Sachs in 2023 to build Multibagg, the first version wasn't the AI platform you see today. The early beta was a simpler screener with thematic stock baskets and fundamental filters.

But user feedback kept circling back to one problem: "I found the stock, now what?"

Investors didn't just want discovery. They wanted research without reading 200-page annual reports.

That's when Aanand pivoted hard into AI. He built Iris, a chatbot trained on exchange filings that could answer "What's Castrol's data center strategy?" in seconds.

The insight that Castrol (a lubricant company) sells coolants to data centers? That came from Iris parsing an investor presentation no retail investor would ever read.

The pivot delayed launch by months but defined the product's moat.

Our Take

The broker integration for portfolio sync is smart. Once users connect their Zerodha or Groww accounts, switching costs become real. Most fintech startups ignore this lock-in opportunity.

The Pattern You Can Steal

If you're building in data-heavy verticals like fintech, legal, or healthcare, don't just build discovery tools. The real value is in synthesis: helping users understand what they found.

RAG over domain-specific documents is table stakes now. The question is whether your AI can surface insights humans would miss.

How We Got Here: India's Retail Investor Explosion

YearDemat AccountsWhat Happened
201936 millionRetail investing is niche
202055 millionCOVID + zero-brokerage apps trigger explosion
2023139 millionChatGPT launches, AI research tools race begins
2025200 millionRetail investors drive 50%+ of daily volume

5.5x in 6 years. This is why every fintech startup is building AI for retail investors.

Where This Is Going

SEBI's February 2025 regulations made it clear: any entity using AI for investment advice is solely responsible for output accuracy. This kills the "AI said it, not us" defense.

The winners will be platforms that stay on the right side of "research tool" vs "advisory service." Multibagg's positioning ("we help you research, not recommend") is deliberately safe. But as AI gets better, regulatory lines will blur.

Contrarian take: Zerodha just integrated Claude AI via MCP for portfolio analysis. If brokers build AI research in-house, standalone platforms like Multibagg need distribution moats (WhatsApp, communities) fast, or they become features, not products.

🤔 WTF of the Week

AlphaNiftyAI, an academic project using Llama3-70B for NIFTY 50 trading signals, claims 127.80% returns over 2 years in backtests. It's open-source. Retail traders are actually using it.

Backtests aren't live trading, but try explaining that to Reddit.

↗️ Trend Signal

RAG for Finance is the pattern.

Every new AI stock tool (Multibagg's Iris, Zerodha's Claude integration, Japan Exchange's disclosure search) uses retrieval-augmented generation over filings.

If you're building in fintech AI and not doing RAG, you're already behind.

The Global Landscape

Multibagg isn't building in a vacuum. Here's who else is playing in AI stock research:

The Big Players

CompanyWhereFundingWhat Makes Them Different
AlphaSenseUS$650M, $4B valuationEnterprise market leader, acquired Tegus
TradingViewUS$339M, $3B valuationCharts + social, massive retail distribution
QuartrSweden$17M+, $125M valuationAPI-first, powers TradingView and Perplexity
TipRanksIsrael$84M, acquired for $200M50M users, B2B2C to Robinhood/Nasdaq

The Emerging Players (Multibagg's Real Comps)

CompanyWhereFundingTarget
Fiscal.aiCanada$13M Series AProsumer, 350K users
WaikerSouth Korea$10M Pre-AB2B, outperformed GPT on stock tasks
OpenBBUS$8.5M seedOpen-source, quant-focused
DanelfinSpain€2MRetail, AI Score for stocks
Multibagg AIIndia$180KRetail India, Iris chatbot

The Pattern Worth Watching: Quartr

Quartr (Stockholm) hit $125M valuation with 97 employees by building the B2B2C playbook:

  • Quartr Pro: Desktop platform for hedge funds (3 of world's top 5 by AUM are clients)
  • Quartr API: Powers earnings call data for TradingView, Perplexity, NAVER
  • Free Mobile App: Retail distribution, but not the revenue driver

They don't compete for retail users directly. They power the platforms that do.

For Multibagg: If Indian brokers need AI research capabilities, being their API provider might be faster than acquiring 10M retail users directly.

What We're Watching

The broker-embedded threat is real. In Singapore and Korea, banks are building AI in-house:

  • OCBC built A.I. Oscar
  • PhillipCapital launched POEMS GPT
  • DB Securities integrated SwingStar

If Zerodha and Groww do the same, standalone platforms like Multibagg become features, not products. The window to become the "Bridgewise of India" (B2B infrastructure) may be closing.

Open-source LLMs are commoditizing the AI layer. 20+ Chinese brokers integrated DeepSeek in early 2025. Moats are shifting to data (filings, concalls) and distribution (broker integrations, WhatsApp channels).
